Jake Herbert and Bill Smith to go ‘On the Mat’ this week

“On the Mat” is a presentation of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. The show can be heard live on the Internet at www.kcnzam.com or locally in Northeast Iowa each Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:00 PM Central on AM 1650, The Fan.

Each week “On the Mat” will interview an Olympic wrestling hopeful leading up to the Olympic Trials in Iowa City on April 21-22. This week’s interview is with Jake Herbert.

Herbert will compete in the freestyle division at 185 pounds. He was a 2009 World silver medalist and a two-time NCAA champion for Northwestern.

Smith was an Olympic champion in 1952. He was an NCAA champion for Iowa State Teachers College (now Northern Iowa) in 1949 and 1950. Smith was part of the 1950 NCAA championship team that is being inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa on April 14, 2012, in Waterloo, Iowa.
